Why I Became A Financial Advisor

Like many people, I have not always had a clear vision of where my career would ultimately lead.

I grew up in a family of medical providers, so for a long time, I assumed I would follow a similar path. However, that expectation quickly faded when I realized two things: I don’t particularly handle blood well, and my interests don’t align with clinical work.

What did stay consistent between my passion and my family’s career choices was the underlying pull behind the medical path in the first place: a people-focused career. I wanted to build relationships, sit across the table from individuals and families, and help them navigate important decisions.

The Moment It Clicked

That clarity came into focus when I was offered an internship with a financial advisor in Tuscaloosa. He invited me into the day-to-day work and generously allowed me to observe client meetings and the financial planning process firsthand.

During the internship, I was surprised to learn how personal financial planning really can be.

The conversations with clients were built on trust. We walked with them through questions about retirement timing, family responsibilities, major life decisions, and the uncertainty that can come with change. The technical side mattered, but what stood out most was the human side: the sense of relief many people describe when they feel more organized, better informed, and supported through the next steps.

That was the moment it clicked. My experiences throughout the internship showed me this was a career I could see myself in long-term and one where I could serve people in a meaningful way.

Building The Skills To Serve Well

From there, my path became more intentional. I gained experience through a few professional stops along the way, earned my CFP® certification, and continued to expand my technical knowledge while refining the relationship skills essential for this work.

That path eventually led me to The Welch Group, and I’m grateful it did. I value the opportunity to serve our clients as a part of a team that cares deeply about people and approaches this work thoughtfully.

Why This Work Matters To Me

As a financial advisor at The Welch Group, one of the things I enjoy most about my job is the variety. I have the opportunity to work with a broad range of clients, and no two situations or personalities are exactly the same. Meeting people I otherwise would never have known, learning what matters to them, and helping them think through important decisions are both a privilege and among the most rewarding parts of the profession.

As an advisor, some of the most impactful experiences I’ve had involve working with families after the loss of a loved one. In these moments, our focus isn’t on “fixing” anything. It’s about being present with the family and walking alongside them to provide steady support during an incredibly difficult time. We strive to listen carefully, take things step by step, and help bring organization and clarity to what can quickly feel overwhelming.

What stands out most to me about these moments and the work as a whole is the transformation that can occur when someone understands they no longer have to carry the financial side of life alone. It’s not that every question is answered instantly; rather, it’s because there’s a thoughtful process, a plan in place, and a team helping them move forward one decision at a time.

Bringing It All Together

Looking back, I’m grateful for the direction my career has taken, and for the people and experiences that helped shape it along the way. What began as a desire for a people-centered profession ultimately led me to financial planning.

From my first internship to my current role as an advisor, each step has reinforced what I value most about this work: it’s practical, personal, and centered on helping people navigate important decisions. Whether that involves long-term planning or simply helping someone get organized when life feels like it changed overnight, it’s a privilege to now be a part of a team that sits with people in moments that matter and helps bring structure to the financial side of the equation.
