Methodology: 2024 Best Place to Work in Birmingham
The 2024 Best Places to Work survey measures nine key engagement categories: team dynamics, trust in leadership, communication and resources, manager effectiveness, individual needs, engagement outcomes, career growth and development, future outlook, and diversity and inclusion. To receive statistically sound results, companies must reach a minimum level of employee participation, based on the total number of employees, to be eligible to be a finalist. Responses from each question of each completed survey are compiled and evaluated. This score is calculated by compiling all raw data from the questions on a scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Each response correlates with a score from 1 to 6 to get an average score out of 6, which is then indexed to a 100-point score. Companies are ranked, and finalists are chosen according to their overall score by size category. Winners and finalists are chosen solely based on the employee survey results.

Survey Process: The program begins with an open call for nominations, allowing companies to self-nominate. Once nominated, organizations complete the survey setup by providing company details and uploading employee email addresses into Quantum Workplace’s portal. During the survey period, employees receive unique, non-transferable survey links. Those without personal computers or email access can use a shared device with a unique link or complete a paper survey. After data collection, Quantum Workplace conducts a security audit to disqualify organizations that violate contest rules. Survey results are then analyzed to identify companies with the highest employee engagement, which are recognized as Best Places to Work.
Survey Methodology: Developed in 2003 by industry experts, the Best Places to Work survey initially included 75 workplace-related items. After analyzing over a million responses, the survey was refined to 37 core items, which explain over 99% of engagement variation. The methodology is reviewed annually and was last updated in 2023 to reflect evolving workplace trends. The survey evaluates nine key engagement areas: team dynamics, trust in leadership, communication and resources, manager effectiveness, individual needs, engagement outcomes, career growth, future outlook, and diversity and inclusion.
